Warmer weather brings out Southern California's only native poisonous snake, the Southern Pacific and the Southwestern Speckled rattlesnake. Rattlesnake encounters are a relatively common event in Ramona, especially the Country Estates. Most of these encounters are scary, yet do not present a problem if the proper precautions are followed.

  • Step away from the snake, the maximum strike zone for the snake is about one third to one half its total body length.
  • Simply leave it alone as the snake is just as terrified of you! Ramona Department/ CAL-FIRE snakebite responses are usually a result of this mistake.

If struck by a rattle snake:

  • Remain calm, most bites do not result in death.
  • Do not cut the wound. This procedure is generally recognized as ineffective. You may accidentally cut arteries or other structures.

Fire Department personnel will respond to remove the snake if a risk to public safety exist. Most often this is when the snake is inside a home.
